Heavy Industrial Concrete Starts With What’s Under the Surface
Industrial equipment at a dredging facility puts enormous loads on its foundations. For this project, Bindewald Maintenance built the forms and set the reinforcement for a 4-foot-thick concrete foundation at an active dredging and aggregate site.
A slab this thick depends on what goes in before the concrete truck arrives:
Formwork: our crew framed the perimeter with heavy plywood forms, braced with lumber walers and stakes to hold the weight and pressure of a deep pour.
Reinforcement: multiple layers of rebar were tied into a dense grid, with vertical bars and hooked bars tying the top and bottom mats together.
Spacing and cover: the rebar cage sits on concrete block supports, so it stays at the correct height and the steel is fully encased once the concrete is placed.
Working around a live site: all of this was built beneath the facility’s conveyors and overhead structures, with the crew working safely around ongoing operations.
The pour is scheduled next. We’ll update this post with photos of the finished foundation.
